Is dental sedation right for you?

Does being at the dental office make you feel tense?

Do you delay or skip dental treatments due to anxiety?

Here at Southdown Dental in Mississauga, ON, we understand that not everyone feels at ease at the dental chair.

Dental anxieties and fears exist, but missing procedures you need now can result in bigger problems down the road.

We work with you so you can receive dental care comfortably. One option we’re offering here in our practice is dental sedation. Sedatives help you feel relaxed during appointments. Ask us to share more about them with you on your next visit.

What is dental sedation?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you feel comfortable during dental procedures. It doesn’t necessarily put you to sleep as you can still communicate with your dentist.

Sedation dentistry gets rid of the stress so you can stay still at the dental chair and complete your procedure with little to no interruption. It allows your dentist to work faster and more accurately, which, in turn, helps ensure treatment success.

It’s beneficial if you need long or complex procedures or if you feel anxious about potential pain, use of needles, or the sights, smells and sounds at the dental office. In some instances, your dentist may combine the use of sedation with local or general anesthetic, so you won’t feel any discomfort or pain.

How does dental sedation work?

The steps involved vary depending on the type of sedation your dentist is using. Oral sedation, for example, is taken orally. Nitrous oxide, on the other hand, is given to you at the dental office.

Here at Southdown Dental, we educate you about what you can expect before, during, and after your procedure. Addressing doubts and concerns helps eliminate fears. We help you understand the benefits, limitations, and risks involved in every procedure.

Types of sedation dentistry

Here are the common types of dental sedation:

  1. Nitrous oxide. Also known as inhaled sedation or laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild form of dental sedation. You receive it through a mask that your dentist places over your nose. Your dentist can adjust the dose depending on your needs. Since nitrous oxide is mild, you stay awake throughout your procedure, but you feel more relaxed. You also don’t need to arrange transportation as the effects of the gas wear off quickly.
  2. Oral sedation. Oral sedation involves taking medications orally. Depending on the dose or type of medication, the effects can be minimal to moderate. You may need to take a pill several hours before your visit and another one right before the procedure. You may feel drowsy, but you’ll still be awake. Should you fall asleep, your dentist can wake you up with a gentle shake.
  3. IV sedation. Intravenous (IV) sedation is administered through the vein, which allows it to work fast. Your dentist can also adjust the dosage depending on your specific needs. You may feel drowsy and become less aware of your environment. Your dental team monitors your condition and reaction to the medication throughout the procedure. Since this sedation is stronger and may last a bit longer in your system, you need to arrange for somebody to take you to the dental office and back home safely.
