Dental Crowns & Caps

Full porcelain crown

Full cast alloy/ gold crown

Full porcelain fused to metal

Your dental team in south Mississauga restores the function and beauty of your smile. One way we do this is by inserting dental crowns. A dental crown or cap is an artificial tooth fitted over a damaged or weak tooth. It can also be used to cover a tooth that had root canal work.

At Southdown Dental, we use a technology called iTero Digital 3D Imaging to produce crowns that look and feel natural.

How it Works

Your dentist will first prepare the tooth, then digital photos of the tooth will be taken and forwarded to the laboratory. You’ll get a temporary crown to protect the affected tooth.

Once the final restoration is ready, your dentist will check how it fits and looks on you. If you’re happy with the results of your crown, your dentist will proceed to cement it in place.

Types of Crowns

The restorative materials that can be used for crowns are:

  • All-porcelain
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Gold

Your dentist will recommend a material based on desired appearance, durability, and level of strength.

All-Porcelain Crowns

The leading choice for crown material is all-porcelain. Today, patients can look into zirconia or aluminous materials that offer a metal-free option.

Since the use of metals is no longer required, the thickness of the material is also reduced. This makes all-porcelain crowns even more ideal in tight or limited spaces.

The absence of metal also allows light to be transmitted through the porcelain giving the crown a more natural look. Although the durability of crown materials has evolved, you still need to be careful when biting or chewing.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

For a successful placement, your dentist ensures there’s sufficient space on the tooth which the metal requires.

The laboratory technologist’s skill determines the success of this procedure. The final restoration should resemble a real tooth.

You should know the gold or metal material may show as your gums recede over time.  Some patients choose to replace the crown later on to maintain a natural look.

Gold Crowns or Caps

Gold crowns or caps aren’t as popular as other materials for esthetic reasons. However, in some instances, it may be required. For example, a patient with a strong bite or teeth grinding issues may benefit more from gold crowns.

Gold crowns offer a stronger foundation and can withstand heavy chewing forces, making them appropriate for back teeth or molars. They also require less preparation than other crown materials.

Gold is also less abrasive which helps prevent your teeth from wearing fast.
