How long do implants last?

If you’re missing one or more teeth, you can replace them and maintain your healthy smile with dental implants. A dental implant is a titanium screw attached into and later bonds with the jawbone. The process is called osseointegration.

Unlike dentures, implants are permanently affixed. They look and feel like natural teeth and do not require special care. They only need to be cared for the way you would your natural teeth.

Implants are a durable and effective tooth replacement option. If you’re considering a tooth implant in Mississauga, our team at Southdown Dental can help.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants may be used as a single implant or with another restorative procedure, such as dentures.

As a single implant, it can provide a sturdy foundation for the crown replacement. Used in conjunction with dentures, dental implants can offer greater stability. Implants may also help eliminate dental sores as the dentures no longer need to be placed directly on exposed gums.

Also, dental implants don’t require thinning of the surrounding teeth. Eating remains pleasurable too as there aren’t any food restrictions. Since your tooth replacement stays firmly in place you can confidently socialize.

The Dental Implant Process

Attaching implants can be done in a single visit. However, it can take up to six months for the implants to heal and fuse to the bone.

Here’s more detail on the process:

  1. The titanium post called the implant is attached to your jawbone. Your dentist will also place a protective cover screw on top of the implant.
  2. The implant will bond with the bone after some time, creating a durable foundation for your replacement tooth.
  3. Once the implant bonds with the jawbone, your dentist will remove the protective cover and place the abutment on top of the implant. The abutment will connect the implant to the replacement tooth.
  4. The crown, bridge, or dentures can now be placed on the abutment.
